An Alternative to Appraisal
Use a performance improvement system instead of an appraisal or evaluation system.
Fallacy 1: Supervisors are omniscient, they see and know all.
Truth: Supervisors do not see everything, miss some things, & often take vacations.
Fallacy 2: A well-trained supervisor can overcome rater bias.
Truth: Most of us are human.
Fallacy 3: Appraisal instruments contain all the important dimensions of performance.
Truth: It is not possible to account for all performance dimensions for all positions, and types of employees on any appraisal instrument.
Fallacy 4: Appraising performance is enough.
Truth: Bad behavior undermines good performance.
Fallacy 5: Performance Appraisal is a reliable basis for making administrative decisions.
Truth: There at least 15 flaws attributed to Performance Appraisals, any, or all of them undermine the administrative decisions based upon their use.
Fallacies 6-15: There are at least 15 fallacies of appraisals.
